When the Old Plank Road Trail 5K kicked off the morning of Saturday, Oct. 5, three generations of one family were ready to race.

Frankfort resident Nick Schalmo joined his son Breyden and his mother, Lori Bartels, from Manteno, at the starting line. It was the family’s first time participating in the race.

“My son encouraged me to do this today,” Schalmo explained. “He is starting to get into running. He wanted to give this a shot.”

Bartels said she wanted to compete because of the beautiful weather outside.
