The first event was a sign it was going to be a good day for Mason Rhode and the Lincoln-Way East swim team.

In the 200-yard medley relay that kicked off the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 22, Rhode swam a blistering 22.25-second split in the butterfly portion and the Griffins won in 1 minute, 37.28 seconds to qualify for state.

Rhode, a senior, went on to win the 200 individual medley (1:53.59) and 100 butterfly (50.46), also qualifying in those two events for the state meet, which is set for Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, Feb. 29, at Evanston High School.
